What actually differs
All of the serious brands use the same basic recipe: individually addressable RGB plus a dedicated warm-white diode, seated in a powder-coated aluminum channel, driven by a Wi-Fi controller. That is why the spec sheets look so similar. The meaningful differences are narrower than the marketing:
1. The channel profile
How small and how well color-matched the track is, which decides how invisible the system looks in daylight. This is where Gemstone and JellyFish have historically had an edge, and where the cheapest options give themselves away.
2. The app
Every app does presets, zones, schedules and patterns. JellyFish's is the most polished. In practice most homeowners set three presets and a dusk timer and never open it again, so weigh this less than the demo makes you want to.
3. Who is actually on your roof
This is the one that matters and the one nobody's comparison chart includes. Most of these brands sell through dealer networks, so "Trimlight" in one city and "Trimlight" in the next are different companies with different crews. A clean install with hidden wiring and straight runs on a mid-priced system beats a sloppy install of a premium one every time.
4. Who answers in year four
A lifetime LED warranty is only worth the company still being reachable. Ask any installer — us included — how long they've been doing this and what happens when you call about one dead bulb in 2031.
Our honest position: if another local installer quotes you a clean job on a good system at a fair price, take it. We'd rather lose a quote than talk somebody into a system they didn't need. What we compete on is showing the price up front, doing the work ourselves, and picking up the phone later.
Questions worth asking whoever you call
- Is the crew that installs it employed by you, or subcontracted?
- What exactly does the warranty cover in year five — parts only, or the trip and the labor too?
- Will you show me a daytime photo of a house you did, not a render?
- Is the price on this quote firm, or does it change after you see the roof?
- What's the channel color-matched to, and can you show me the actual color?
